Hockey Night In Canada

It's Saturday and hockey is in the air tonight like Phil Collins. Habs vs. Leafs is the main event this evening. Thanks to NHL Center Ice, this Philadelphian can partake in a Canadian Saturday night tradition, Hockey Night in Canada... and it doesn't get better than the Maple Leafs battling the Habs in Montreal.

This game should no doubt be a dandy. The Canadiens put a beat down on my Flyers the other night so I am hoping they get thudded 6-2 on home ice. I want those salty Habs fans to exit the Bell Centre and flock St. Catherine street in large numbers for an extra-special Saturday night drinking binge.

I can see it now... disgruntled Habs fans sitting elbow-to-elbow in the pub, talking about the great Montreal teams of yester-year:

Habs fan #1: "Man, these Leafs are a bitch!"

Habs fan #2: "Mon ami, we will return to greatness!"

Habs fan #3: "Remember Rick Chartraw and Doug Jarvis?"

Habs fan #4: "Ya, those were the days, eh?!"

The Leafs/Habs game was a junk fest between two mediocre teams with TERRIBLE goalies decided by a weak-ass PPG by Matt Stajan with under two minutes left. At least the Habs fans got to file out of the arena knowing that they will get to beat up on Boston and Now-Awful Buffalo in their own division probably leading to a playoff berth. The REAL HOCKEY fans in Canada should have been tuning into the WONDERFUL EVENT on Long Island where HISTORY was unfolding. 75 year-old Hall of Fame Legend Al Arbour was invited to co-coach a game with Ted Nolan. The game gave him an EVEN 1500 games coached with one team, an NHL record. If that wasnt enough, the Isles rallied for a 3-2 victory against everybodys bogus darlings, The Pittsburgh Penguins. Miro Satan sealed it with a goal past OverRated Fleury giving Arbour 750 wins with the Isles, also a NHL record for one team. The postgame festivities included on-ice appearances from the Isles brass, A large contingent of Al's family, and Many Islander legends from Al's coaching years, including Bossy, Trottier, and Many Others. The 1499 banner was lowered and the 1500 banner was raised and the 750 banner will be raised later this season at a "Core of Four" Islanders evening. The Rare Extended Center Ice coverage even caught a meeting between Fellow legend Scotty Bowman and Arbour in the tunnel after a short interview with Al. Those two won 13 stanley cups coaching between them and Al won 4 more as a player. Of course Al played with Detroit, Chicago, Toronto, and St Louis before coaching the Isles to 4 cups. Bowman coached Montreal to 5 cups before 1 in Pitt and 3 in Detroit.

Seeing Arbour get his shit respected was cool as hell. Even the chinaman rolled in thick for the occassion...

That being said, the battle of Canada main event did not disappoint. Except for a few phantom/suspect calls by the zebras, the game was quite good. Not necessarily the Lafleur vs. Sittler or Muller vs. Gilmour days, but decent regardless.

Stop hating on the Original Six and Mats. Soon you'll be picking on my boy Hemsky again...
